Located in the Boyle Heights community of East Los Angeles, the Family Medicine Residency Program offers residents unique opportunities to connect with and serve their community.
Our program’s mission is to train physicians who want to serve vulnerable communities. The Family Medicine Residency was founded by six Latino physicians who had a passion and drive to spread this mission. From day one, our faculty have been community-focused and deeply connected to the Boyle Heights population.
Why Choose Our Family Medicine Residency?
Our Family Medicine Residency combines hands-on training with academic opportunities and scholarly activity. In our program, residents can expect:
- Community-focused medicine:Residents in the Family Medicine Program get out and interact with the community from the very first day of their training. The root of our mission is to bring health and hope to our community and to work towards solutionswiththe community, rather thanforthe community. Because East Los Angeles is a state designated medically underserved area, our residents and faculty are bonded by the mission to offer health, advocacy, and wholeness with a spirit of compassion and humility. Residents have opportunities to directly reach ourcommunitythrough the Family Health Center, as well as through our comprehensive rotations, and long-standing partnerships with community-based organizations. Our overarching goal is to help every resident achieve their goal of making a difference for vulnerable populations throughout their careers.
- Commitment to excellence:Our curriculum tends to be more inpatient-focused than others — that’s because we know that diverse inpatient experience creates exceptional outpatient doctors. When residents have experience treating high-acuity patients, they develop the crucial skills needed to practice medicine anywhere and excel in value-based performance. We have designed our program so that residents graduate equipped with every tool they need to complete their professional goals, whether that’s outpatient practice, a hybrid of hospitalist and outpatient practice, or additional sub-specialty training. The academic rigor of our program is widely recognized and 100% of our graduates seeking fellowships have been successful in obtaining them.
- Access to the latest technology:At Adventist Health White Memorial, residents have access to the latest technology in medicine. Through ourLyman A. Brewer III MD Simulation Center, residents can practice ultrasounds, sutures, medical codes and more in a low-risk setting. The Simulation Center is available 24/7 and the center’s leaders collaborate with medical directors so that residents have access to any necessary board-related simulation. Adventist Health uses the CERNER electronic health record and is part of the Los Angeles Network for Enhanced Services (LANES) health information exchange platform connecting public and private hospitals in Los Angeles County. We are also one of the only Family Medicine Residency Programs in Southern California with a dedicated pediatrics floor. This gives residents a more well-rounded experience in learning to care for all types of patients.
- Leadership development: The next 10-15 years will witness an acceleration of policy changes that will dramatically affect the way we practice and will call on the physician’s voice to bring reason to healthcare reform. Since its inception, the Family Medicine Residency Program has provided an industry-leading longitudinal curriculum in Health Systems Science (practice management and management of health systems). This curriculum develops the leadership skills of our residents in health policy, health services research, community engagement and power-building.
- Emphasis on well-being:Academic success is important — but we recognize that residents are people, too. We strictly adhere to all Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) guidelines regarding time off and duty hour regulations. We offerwell-beingresources such as counseling services, wellness retreats and complimentary access to our fitness center. We understand that when physicians care for themselves, they are better equipped to care for their patients.
