Today & Into the Future: 2003 & Beyond

White Memorial Medical Center is a 353-bed acute care teaching hospital staffed by 400 physicians, 1,800 employees and 400 volunteers. The hospital serves more than 165,000 customers annually with a wide variety of medical specialties, including obstetrics & gynecology, pediatrics, cardiac care, diabetes, emergency services, rehabilitation, cancer services, orthopedics and behavioral health.

Hospital visitors experience extraordinary examples of collaboration between White Memorial Medical Center and the community of East Los Angeles such as the Cecilia Gonzalez De La Hoya Cancer Center, a memorial gift from boxer Oscar De La Hoya and his family; the MAOF/White Memorial Rainbow Children's Center, a joint venture between the hospital and the Mexican-American Opportunity Foundation to fill the need for quality bilingual and bicultural childcare; and a host of other facilities, programs and services.

The New White Memorial

In 2010, White Memorial completed a major building and seismic upgrade project called The New White Memorial. Over the previous five years, the hospital campus was transformed by the construction of a new main hospital building (completely replacing structures built in 1937 and 1955), renovation of the East and North Towers and the creation of a new main entrance and patient greeting areas, as well as several related improvements.

Spurred by updated earthquake safety laws following the 1994 Northridge earthquake and the receipt of FEMA funding, The New White Memorial project has resulted in state-of-the-art medical facilities that are welcoming for patients, families and visitors and completely seismically upgraded to the most current standards.

Today's modern, technologically advanced hospital seems far away from the tiny storefront clinic that opened almost 100 years ago in downtown Los Angeles. Our new medical campus represents an undeniable spirit of Christian compassion and our deep commitment to be a center of healing in the City of Angels well into the 21st century.
