Pharmacy Residency Program

The Adventist Health Ukiah Valley Postgraduate Year One (PGY-1) Pharmacy Residency Program was established in 2019 and awarded full accreditation by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) in 2020. This 12-month program builds on the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Education to foster development of comprehensive clinical practice skills preparing residents to excel in a variety of practice settings. Longitudinal activities include drug information, MUE, P&T, Journal Club, readmission prevention, community outreach, preceptorship, research/publication, and quality-improvement/quality-assurance.

The new residents will have 8 weeks of orientation. During this time the residents will be oriented to the program and the pharmacy department by the current residents, preceptors, RPD, and the management team. The residents will work under P&T approved protocols in many clinical areas of inpatient care including antimicrobial therapy, anticoagulation, parenteral nutrition, and more. The program can be tailored to meet the needs of the individual residents to promote learning in areas where the resident is most interested in. The residents are expected to attend various clinical rounds and provide patient counseling during their rotations. The residents will also be expected to complete a research project to be presented at the Western States Conference. Writing skills for publications is part of the residency curriculum. The residents are involved in many decision-making processes as part of leadership training: improvement of the program, operational and clinical processes, accreditation survey preparation, residency showcases, open houses, community outreach, attend Pharmacy & Therapeutics committee meetings, etc.

The program provides comprehensive training in all aspects of hospital clinical practice. The goal of the program is to develop the knowledge, skills, and philosophy required to become an excellent clinical pharmacist. The residency curriculum is customizable to the resident’s specific goals.

PGY1 Program Purpose

PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
