Surgical Weight Loss at Adventist Health Castle
Dec 14, 2020
Bariatric Surgery is a surgical weight loss procedure offered by Adventist Health Castle. With over 2,000 cases performed, Adventist has established a transparent record of safety and is ready to assist anyone looking to begin their weight loss journey.
“Our program was started in 2006. From the very beginning, we designed our program to provide comprehensive management to bariatric patients with a focus to provide the highest caliber of care,” says Dr. Steven Fowler. “We continue to address surgery in a coordinated fashion, incorporating a safe operation with dietary, exercise, behavioral health, and a commitment to long term follow up.”
Adventist’s bariatric surgery program is one of the first in the state to receive the Centers of Excellence status by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery in 2009.
“We have had continuous certification ever since. This certification has evolved into the MBSAQIP designation, which is overseen by the American College of Surgeons,” Fowler says. “We are one of only three programs in the state that hold this certification. We are also the only program in the state that holds the Comprehensive Center with Adolescent designation. In addition, HMSA has certified us with the Blue Cross Center of Distinction designation. We are the only program in the state that holds this designation.”
People are doing these operations not only for weight loss, but also to treat their diabetes. 90 percent of Type 2 diabetes is attributable to excess body fat. Prevalence is about 10 percent for U.S. population and 25 percent of people with severe obesity. Diabetes is one of the top ten leading causes of death. 10 percent of all health care dollars is attributed to diabetes.
