Reclaiming Your Health Starts Now
Aug 28, 2024
When the back-to-school frenzy comes to a close, it’s the perfect time to turn the focus on you. Amidst the daily hustle of caring for others, it’s easy for mothers to put their own health needs on the back burner. However, prioritizing your health is crucial for your well-being and your ability to care for others effectively.
Health Starts with Mom
Moms frequently find themselves at the center of family health management. From scheduling doctor’s appointments to ensuring everyone takes their medications, your role is vital. “Mothers are often the primary decision-makers when it comes to family health,” explains Dr. Maryam Tabrizi, a family medicine physician at Adventist Health Glendale. “If you’re not at your best, it becomes challenging to care for others effectively. Making your health a priority ensures you’re in optimal condition to handle career, family, and everyday life demands. Routine health screenings can help detect potential issues before they become serious, enabling you to stay healthy.”
Addressing Minor Symptoms Early
It’s common for mothers to dismiss minor symptoms as just part of the busy life of parenting. “Minor symptoms like persistent fatigue, unexplained weight changes, or frequent headaches should not be ignored,” advises Dr. Beatris Ther Hacopian, a family medicine physician at Adventist Health Glendale. “These can sometimes be early indicators of underlying health conditions that may require attention.”
Women’s health screenings are a crucial aspect of preventive care. Regular gynecological exams, mammograms, and screenings for conditions like diabetes, osteoporosis, or cardiovascular disease are essential. “Detecting these conditions early can significantly improve treatment outcomes and overall health,” Dr. Ther Hacopian emphasized.
Don’t Neglect Reproductive Health
Reproductive health is another critical area that requires regularly scheduled attention. Annual breast and gynecological exams (depending on age and risk factors) are essential to every woman’s health. “Routine gynecological exams like pap smears and pelvic exams are key for monitoring reproductive health and preventing common cancers,” notes urogynecology expert Dr. Aldene Zeno. “Symptoms like occasional bladder leaks, back pain, or abdominal discomfort are easy for patients to overlook but should not be ignored. Neglecting exam appointments can lead to missed early signs of conditions that are more easily managed when caught early,” explained Dr. Zeno. “For instance, cervical cancer is highly treatable when detected early through regular pap smears.”
