Early detection is key with this deadly but highly treatable cancer.

Colorectal cancer is one of the deadliest cancers, and yet early detection options make it among the most treatable. “Colonoscopies are by far our most effective tool,” says Razi Arifuddin, MD, a gastroenterologist at Adventist Health Ukiah Valley. Screenings are quick, simple and accurate, and an easy way to stay on top of your colorectal health.

The colorectal cancer screening process

Early detection can prevent colon and rectal cancer, known collectively as colorectal cancer. “I always advise people to take advantage of the advanced technology that can make a huge difference in their health,” Dr. Arifuddin says. “Colorectal cancer is preventable with healthy lifestyle habits and routine screenings. Colonoscopies are a vital tool for identifying cancer risks, and early-warning signs mean we can treat and prevent the risk before it becomes serious.”

A colonoscopy detects polyps, or abnormal growths, which can be removed during the procedure. Doctors use a colonoscope, a long tubular instrument, to check for abnormalities in the lining of the colon. “Most adults between 50 and 75 years old should have a colonoscopy every 10 years, though your doctor may suggest one as early as age 40 based on your personal risk factors,” Dr. Arifuddin says.

Statistics about colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer is the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., and 1 in 3 adults are not properly screened. The good news is that 90 percent of people can be treated or cured of colorectal cancer if it’s detected early. “Colon cancer screenings have a significant impact on cancer prevention,” Dr. Arifuddin says. Colonoscopies are one of the most effective tools for preventing colorectal cancer.
