Definition and Causes
Tinnitus: A symptom, not a disease
Tinnitus, or “ringing in the ears,” is the sensation of hearing sounds not present in your environment. This ringing, buzzing, whooshing or clicking in your ears is typically due to damage in the auditory system. The potential causes of that damage include:
- Exposure to loud or sudden impact noises
- Reaction to medication
- Untreated medical conditions
- Head or neck injuries
- Natural aging process
- Medications
- Earwax blockage
Tinnitus is very real, even if the sound you perceive can’t be heard by people around you. It’s important to consult with an audiologist to determine why you have this symptom.
Do you have disruptive tinnitus?
If you suffer from ringing in your ears, it may be negatively impacting your quality of life. The Adventist Health Portland tinnitus management team has developed a simple questionnaire to help determine if you could benefit from our tinnitus management program. Answer yes or no to each of these questions:
- Is it difficult for you to concentrate because of your tinnitus?
- Do you feel you can no longer cope with your tinnitus?
- Does your tinnitus make it difficult for you to enjoy life?
- Do you have trouble falling asleep at night because of your tinnitus?
- Do you feel depressed because of your tinnitus?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, your tinnitus may be negatively affecting your life. You don’t have to continue suffering. Learn more about our tinnitus management program.
The path to relief is just a conversation away. If you or a loved one is struggling with hearing loss or tinnitus, talk to your audiologist or physician for a referral.
