BE Award Recipient:Luis Fernandez
Department:EVS
Submitted by:Dr. Andrew Bellino
BE Statement:Be a Force for Good
From Co-Worker: Luis was working his shift cleaning the Emergency Department. He was in the lobby when a patient became violent and started shouting at staff as well as destroying multiple computers. Two of our PAs had to quickly run away from the patient to avoid physical harm and were screaming for help. There were many other patients in the lobby at risk including small children. One of them called the police out of fright. We had two security guards in the lobby both of whom confronted the patient but were subdued physically by the patient. Luis jumped in without being asked and tackled the patient so that no further equipment, personnel, or patients could be harmed until the police came and arrested the patient. Luis risked his own personal health and safety to ensure that the rest of our ED staff could be safe. This was not only incredibly courageous but shows a desire to protect our healthcare community in a way far outside of his dedicated role. We are so lucky that Luis acted the way he did to prevent further harm and cannot thank him enough.
