Gastric Bypass Surgery
Effective weight loss surgery
Gastric bypass, performed at Adventist Health Glendale, is both a restrictive and mal absorptive procedure. The stomach is made smaller (30 cubic centimeters), and the small bowel is made shorter. This procedure is also done laparoscopically and usually requires the patient to stay two to three days at the medical center.
Food passes from the esophagus into the smaller pouch, then into the bypassed section of the bowel (jejunum), which decreases absorption. Digestive juices from the stomach, liver and pancreas pass through the duodenum and jejunum and mix in the limb. The food then passes through the rest of the bowel and is excreted. This procedure is not reversible and produces a rapid weight loss.
