The Vera Zilber Birth Center at Adventist Health Castle provides comprehensive birthing services to the families of O‘ahu, delivering more than 1,100 babies a year in our beautiful birthing suites. Expectant parents have come to rely us for personalized care, modern comforts and the convenience of being close to home.
From generous gifts, a completely renovated facility
The Birth Center at AHCS underwent a major renovation in 2008 after the hospital president received an unexpected call from the grandfather of a young woman registered to give birth here. Businessman and philanthropist Joe Zilber offered a gift to Adventist Health Castle in honor of his late wife, Vera Zilber. A request for architectural plans was placed, and nine months later the Vera Zilber Birth Center was complete.
Features of the renovated facility include:
- A secure entrance for the safety of our families
- Birthing rooms equipped with Jacuzzi tubs for laboring moms
- A contemporary reception area
We don’t only cater to the laboring mother’s comfort. Each room has a convertible bed where your weary support person can rest as well.
To add to Mr. Zilber’s gift, the late Dr. Eleanor Crim, long-time obstetrician/gynecologist in Kailua and former chief of staff of Adventist Health Castle, generously bequeathed a significant gift to the Birth Center for its continued improvement. Today, the Eleanor Crim Nursery memorializes Dr. Crim’s dedication and generosity.
We are grateful to both the Joseph and Vera Zilber Foundation and Dr. Eleanor Crim for their generosity. We thank you, our gracious community, for allowing us the privilege to serve you at this most precious time of life.
Designated Baby-Friendly medical center
Adventist Health Castle was designated a Baby-Friendly Hospital by the accrediting organization Baby-Friendly USA. Mothers who give birth at Baby-Friendly medical centers and birthing centers are more likely to initiate exclusive breastfeeding and sustain exclusive breastfeeding at six months and one year postpartum.
All of our staff at the Birth Center are trained to provide exceptional support to our breastfeeding mothers and their babies. We promote skin-to-skin bonding and "rooming-in" to accommodate breastfeeding on demand. We also provide inpatient lactation consultants and a postpartum mothers’ support group called the"Mommy and Me Hui."
